Activated Carbon vs            SOIL-THERM Thermal Systems

Now that we’ve seen how low SOIL-THERM supplemental fuel costs are - - - are you interested in saving even more more money by cutting your GAC usage and costs? Just keep operating your SOIL-THERM cat-ox instead of installing an SVE blower with Activated Carbon and the overall savings will be substantial.  Here’s how:

COST TO USE ACTIVATED CARBON (GAC) . . .We contacted a local activated carbon supplier, and were told that Virgin Coal Granulated Activated Carbon (GAC) was currently priced at  $0.70/# and with changeout and disposal services we should add another $0.30/#, giving us a total supplied price of $1.00 per pound.  We were also told that in gas station cleanups (BTEX VOC’s), we should expect a 20% load capacity of  the VOC’s per pound of GAC. So, we completed the following chart at varying concentrations and a steady flow of 250 cfm for your review:

This chart shows that if you have a SOIL-THERM Compact-THERM catalytic oxidizer (at 250 cfm), you should wait until about 75 ppmv VOC concentrations before switching over to Activated Carbon to finish cleaning the site.  With the low fuel usage costs of your SOIL-THERM cat-ox, your fuel costs are a lot cheaper than using GAC until you reach the 75 ppmv or lower concentrations. And, you’ll save a lot of money in GAC and use a lot less activated carbon than the Oxidizers with Eclipse Burners (just take a look below)! Another huge cost savings by SOIL-THERM!

CONVERTING TO SVE w/GAC AIN’T CHEAP... Once you’ve decided to replace the oxidizer system with another SVE blower system and carbon vessels, here’s some of the ‘additional ‘ costs you’re likely to incur during this change:

  • Purchase or rental of SVE system with GAC vessels ($2-10,000)
  • Installation and piping to accommodate new GAC SVE system ($1-2,000)
  • Permit changes ($200-500)
  • Electrician, Mechanic, Plumber, Consultant, and other professional labor charges ($200-1000)

YOU COULD CHANGE THE OXIDIZER TO SVE...  Why not leave your SOIL-THERM Compact-THERM working at the site until you hit 75 ppmv - - then make a few piping changes and switch it over to SVE only? We’ve made it easy to turn our versatile Compact-THERM into an SVE blower system - - and easy to install the GAC on the vacuum side of our system. Then, TURN OFF THE OXIDIZER AND JUST RUN THE SVE BLOWER! Save a ton of money, and make it real easy on your construction & SVE setup costs!  Use SOIL-THERM thermal systems from high concentrations all the way to site cleanup - - using the same piece of equipment!

WHAT ABOUT THOSE “CONVENTIONAL OXIDIZERS” ? . . We knew you’d be wondering how well the Conventional Oxidizers could do and how soon you need to change over to GAC when using one of their cat-ox systems.  Take a look at the graph below!  According to our evaluation, you should change to GAC as soon as you reach 175 ppmv and lower - - because the money spent on GAC becomes significantly lower than the supplemental fuel costs.   In summary, the Conventional Oxidizer systems require operators to switch over to GAC much earlier and at much higher VOC concentrations than the SOIL-THERM systems.  This results in more activated carbon waste generated, higher disposal costs, and potential future liability. Stick with SOIL-THERM to keep your costs down all the way through your project!

“We currently own three SOIL-THERM mobile dual phase thermal systems, custom built to our specs. These systems provide impressive processing rates, high destruction efficiencies, and are extremely reliable. We’ve used the others, SOIL-THERM is the best and uses at least 50% less fuel!”.  Tom Waller, PE, Principal Engr, Holguin Fahan & Assoc.

“SOIL-THERM designed and built a Mobile-THERM system that was impressive to look at and operated using much less fuel than all others we’ve used. The finest equipment at a great price.” Steve Diamond, EnviroTRAC

“It has been my field experience that  SOIL-THERM oxidizer systems are  as much as 50% more energy efficient than the other conventional oxidizers.  Our SOIL-THERM mobile dual phase oxidizer system has been extremely reliable and versatile. Its custom design achieves excellent operation over a wide range of flows and concentrations”. Dan Louks, Vice President, GSA Engineering

“I operate over 30 SVE thermal systems from all manufacturers.  Based on my field experience, I have found that SOIL-THERM systems are much more energy efficient and outperform the others by far ! Thery’re also highly reliable and have excellent uptime”. Darren Azarian, Principal, Integral Engineering Services, Inc.
